Gram panchayat is a basic governing institution in Indian villages. It is a political institution, acting as cabinet of the village. The Gram sabha work as the general body of the Gram panchayat. The members of the Gram panchayat are elected directly by the people.
In the decision of the Central Information Commission in the case titled PS Sahoo vs CPIO, Andaman and Nicobar Administration, Pradhan Gram Panchayat bearing no. CIC/SM/A/2012/001632, it has been held that details of funds and schemes under the Gram Panchayat has to be disclosed the public at large under the RTI Act.
